The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) and the Harare City Council met on Monday to explore potential collaboration in the development of football infrastructure, a move that could address the dire state of stadiums in the country.
A key outcome of the discussions was a provisional offer of land for the establishment of a new ZIFA headquarters and football stadiums, as announced by Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume.
This proposal comes at a crucial time when Zimbabwe is facing an infrastructure crisis in football, with the country currently unable to host international matches due to the poor state of its existing stadiums.
For the past few years, Zimbabwe has been forced to play its home international matches in foreign countries after its stadiums were deemed unfit by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Major facilities like the National Sports Stadium and Rufaro Stadium have repeatedly failed to meet CAF standards, leaving local football fans deprived of the opportunity to watch the national team play on home soil.
The collaboration between ZIFA and the Harare City Council is seen as a step in the right direction to restore Zimbabwe’s status as a host for international football.
Investing in modern, CAF-approved stadiums would not only benefit the national team but also boost local football development, attract international tournaments, and create employment opportunities.
The discussions mark the beginning of what could be a transformative initiative for Zimbabwean football. However, challenges such as funding, construction timelines, and maintenance strategies will need to be addressed to ensure the success of the proposed developments.
