Fairness or Favouritism? Mutimukulu Asks for Stats Behind Mutasa’s Selection

The surprise inclusion of Nathan Mutasa, son of media personality Pokello Nare, in Zimbabwe’s provisional COSAFA Cup squad has sparked widespread debate within the local football community, raising serious questions about transparency, merit, and fairness in national team selections.

Mutasa, a player for Premier League side Scottland FC, was drafted into the Warriors squad last week, replacing Dynamos striker Vusa Ngwenya—a move that has divided public opinion and reignited concerns about favoritism and lack of accountability in the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA).

Respected football blogger Makomborero “Gold” Mutimukulu joined the growing voices questioning the basis for Mutasa’s call-up, publishing a widely circulated blog post titled Dreams of Stats & Fairness. In it, he challenged selectors to justify Mutasa’s inclusion with tangible performance metrics.

“National caps are sacred. They are earned,” wrote Mutimukulu. “Without emotional blackmail, tell us why Nathan deserved a national team call-up ahead of other lads… Stats. Numbers don’t lie.”

Mutimukulu’s call for transparency comes in response to a defensive piece by senior journalist Robson Sharuko, who argued that Mutasa, still a young player, deserves support as he pursues his football dream. While Sharuko emphasized empathy and development, critics like Mutimukulu have countered that such arguments should not override the meritocratic principles upon which national team selection should be based.

The public backlash intensified on social media following claims that Mutasa’s inclusion was not officially communicated to Ngwenya by ZIFA officials. The latter reportedly found out about his exclusion from teammates. Compounding the controversy, some fans and analysts have pointed to Mutasa’s recent limited game time at club level.

As recently as a few months ago, Scottland FC coach Tonderai Ndiraya remarked that Mutasa was only fit for 30 minutes of match play in Castle Lager Premier Soccer League fixtures. Critics argue that such fitness concerns make his elevation to the national team highly questionable.

“Suddenly he is now fringe national team material? It’s a miracle,” Mutimukulu commented.

Mutimukulu emphasized that the scrutiny should remain on performance data, not personal affiliations. “Eyes on the ball,” he wrote. “Not Nathan’s mother. She has nothing to do with this.”

He further cautioned against politicizing or personalizing football discourse, urging journalists, fans, and selectors alike to uphold fairness and objectivity.

“If questioning Mutasa’s call-up is seen as hate, then defending it must also be seen as PR. Let’s not go there. Just give us the football stats.”

ZIFA has not yet issued a formal response to the growing criticism or clarified the criteria used for Mutasa’s selection. With the COSAFA Cup approaching, the debate reflects broader concerns about institutional trust, youth development, and the future of Zimbabwean football governance.

 

In the court of public opinion, the case is far from closed. For many fans and players chasing the dream of representing their country, transparency, merit, and fairness remain the minimum expectations—not optional ideals.
