Zimbabwean actor Fanuel Tonganayi, celebrated for his memorable role as Firimoni in the classic comedy series Gringo, has passed away.
His death comes just months after he made a public appeal for financial support—an emotional plea that went unanswered.
Best known for playing the dim-witted but lovable Firimoni, Tonganayi became a staple of Zimbabwean television, bringing laughter to countless homes.
However, in recent years, his life was marked by financial difficulties. In a video shared around five months ago, the actor directly appealed to businessman Wicknell Chivayo for help.
Despite the widespread attention the video received, no assistance was ever given.
Tonganayi’s portrayal of Firimoni, often caught in the chaotic antics of Gringo and Madhumbe, earned him widespread acclaim.
His comedic timing and physical humor made the character unforgettable.
In 2016, The Herald noted that many fans found it hard not to laugh when encountering him in person, so strongly was he associated with the Firimoni character.
Classic scenes—like Firimoni getting stuck on a rooftop overnight or being attacked by bees while climbing a tree—cemented his status as a fan favourite and a key figure in Zimbabwe’s entertainment history.
Interestingly, acting wasn’t part of Tonganayi’s original plan. He began his career at the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) in 1993 as a driver.
The opportunity to play Firimoni came unexpectedly when he was asked to fill in at the last minute.
“I just glanced at the script and performed,” he once said. “People loved it. I never imagined the role would become that big.”
Despite the fame, Tonganayi’s later years were marked by struggle. After leaving ZBC, he turned to farming in Hurungwe, where he cultivated tobacco and ran a grinding mill to make ends meet.
Earlier this year, Tonganayi reached out in a heartfelt video message to Wicknell Chivayo, a businessman known for his lavish lifestyle.
The actor’s call for financial help, which spread widely online, went unanswered.
His passing has left fans grieving not only the loss of a beloved entertainer but also a man whose life ended in hardship—despite the joy he gave to so many.
