Chiredzi Vendor Remains in Custody as Court Set to Rule on Bail Application

A 32-year-old Chiredzi vendor, Tafadzwa Nelston Matanhuse, spent a second consecutive night behind bars on Wednesday following his arrest over allegations of inciting public violence.

Matanhuse was taken into custody on Tuesday and is expected to reappear before the Chiredzi Magistrates Court on Thursday, where Magistrate Mutamba will deliver a ruling on his bail application.

According to the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), Matanhuse is being represented by Advocate Martin Mureri.

ZLHR stated that the charges stem from comments allegedly made by Matanhuse, in which he reportedly accused President Emmerson Mnangagwa and businessman Wicknell Chivhayo of being indifferent to the hardships faced by ordinary Zimbabweans.

The organisation said authorities viewed the remarks as unacceptable, leading to his arrest and subsequent detention.

Meanwhile, Chiredzi Central legislator Blessing Ropafadzo Makumire attended the court proceedings on Wednesday and expressed concern over the circumstances that led to the vendor’s arrest.

Makumire said efforts had been underway to encourage dialogue between informal traders and the local authority following disputes linked to the demolition of vending structures and the eviction of vendors from trading spaces.

He noted that despite attempts to find common ground, tensions escalated, resulting in the current situation.

The MP emphasized the importance of standing by constituents during difficult times, saying leaders have a responsibility to listen to community concerns and push for peaceful, long-term solutions.

Makumire also praised vendors who attended court in support of Matanhuse, describing their conduct as respectful and orderly throughout the proceedings.

In addition, he commended law enforcement officers and security personnel for maintaining professionalism and ensuring that the court process remained peaceful and free from intimidation.

According to Makumire, the case has deeply affected members of the informal trading community, with some vendors becoming emotional over Matanhuse’s detention.

He added that Matanhuse is widely known among local traders for supplying tomatoes on credit, a gesture that has helped many vendors sustain their businesses and support their families.
