Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, the youngest son of former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, has reportedly been fined a total of R600,000 following a conviction in a court in Johannesburg.
According to court proceedings, Mugabe was ordered to pay R400,000 or serve 24 months in prison for pointing a firearm. In a separate but related ruling, he was fined an additional R200,000 or 18 months’ imprisonment for violating immigration laws by residing in South Africa without proper documentation.
Authorities indicated that Mugabe would be deported to Zimbabwe immediately following sentencing. The case has drawn public attention due to Mugabe’s high-profile family background and ongoing scrutiny of legal accountability involving politically connected individuals.
Legal analysts note that South African courts have increasingly taken a firmer stance on both firearm-related offenses and immigration violations, signaling a broader effort to enforce compliance regardless of social or political status.
It remains unclear whether Mugabe will appeal the ruling or comply with the financial penalties ahead of his deportation.
