Bulawayo, Zimbabwe – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched a comprehensive investigation into a daring robbery at the Cold Storage Company (CSC) premises in Bulawayo, where over US$80,000 was stolen. Authorities are strongly considering the possibility of an inside job, given the sophisticated nature of the crime.
The perpetrators reportedly bypassed the company’s security systems with apparent ease, gaining access to and forcing open several office safes. A source close to the investigation, as reported by The Chronicle, indicated that the CCTV cameras were disabled prior to the robbery, significantly hindering immediate identification of the suspects.
This crucial detail, coupled with the method of entry and targeting of specific safes, suggests a detailed understanding of the facility’s layout and security protocols.
ZRP spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the incident and the ongoing investigation. “We’re investigating a case of robbery in which approximately US$80,000 was stolen from the Cold Storage Commission premises in Bulawayo,” Commissioner Nyathi stated. He further elaborated on the preliminary findings, asserting, “Preliminary investigations indicate that this could be an inside job, although investigations are still in progress”.
Detectives are actively pursuing several leads in the case. Commissioner Nyathi has appealed to the public for any information that could assist in apprehending the culprits. As part of the investigative process, police are expected to conduct interviews with CSC employees and security personnel. Forensic experts are also meticulously examining the crime scene for evidence that could lead to arrests.
The incident has raised concerns about corporate security, particularly in institutions handling significant amounts of cash. The focus on an internal conspiracy underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement in combating crimes where perpetrators possess intimate knowledge of their targets.
