An ambulance technician with Redcliff Municipality and his two accomplices have been convicted for stealing cash from a road accident victim they were supposed to assist.
Edius Mugonegwa (40), an ambulance technician, together with Pride Makamba (25) and Anashe Mukwamba (23), appeared before the Kwekwe Magistrates’ Court facing theft charges. The trio was found guilty of stealing US\$1,260 in cash and US\$10 worth of airtime from an injured motorist.
The court heard that on September 7, 2025, Mugonegwa was part of the emergency team that responded to a road traffic accident along the Kwekwe–Redcliff Road. While administering first aid, bloodstained cash fell from the victim’s pocket. Instead of securing the money, Mugonegwa, Makamba, and Mukwamba conspired to take it for personal use.
The victim later discovered that his money was missing after regaining consciousness at Kwekwe General Hospital and reported the matter to the police. Investigations by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Kwekwe led to the arrest of the three, and part of the stolen money was recovered.
Magistrates handed down the following sentences:
Mugonegwa (40): 18 months imprisonment, with three months suspended for five years. The remaining 15 months were commuted to 825 hours of community service.
Makamba (25) and Mukwamba (23): Each received 12 months imprisonment, with three months suspended for five years. The remaining nine months were commuted to 315 hours of community service each.
In delivering judgment, the court condemned the abuse of trust by emergency workers, stressing that medical and rescue personnel have a duty to protect and safeguard accident victims rather than exploit their vulnerability.
