Why Manchester United’s Defeat to Arsenal Still Shows Positive Signs

While Manchester United suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to Arsenal, their performance provided reasons for optimism. Despite conceding an early goal that ultimately decided the game, United showed promising signs of tactical progress and individual quality.

As highlighted on Match of the Day, the team looked sharper and more purposeful. They appeared more physical and direct, and their pressing game was far more assertive—thanks, in part, to the talent added through summer signings.

Although the result didn’t go their way, United were arguably the better side at Old Trafford and might feel hard done by to come away with nothing.

Tactical Consistency, but Greater Intent

Manager Ruben Amorim once again deployed his trusted 3-4-2-1 formation. However, what stood out this time was United’s more aggressive posture, both in and out of possession.

Wing-backs Diogo Dalot and Patrick Dorgu played high up the pitch, contributing heavily to attacking phases. When Amad Diallo came on in the second half, he brought even more offensive intent. This bold pressing strategy carried some risks, as Arsenal occasionally broke through and created overloads. Yet, Amorim’s proactive approach suited United at home.

They played with high intensity, energy, and belief—attributes that were often missing last season, even in games they managed to win. If they can maintain this level of positivity and continue building chemistry, the goals and results should follow.

New Signings Make an Immediate Impact

Newcomers Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo stood out, adding pace, physicality, and confidence in attack. Their presence helped United apply pressure higher up the pitch and reduced the number of mistakes seen when playing out from the back—an issue that plagued them last season.

United managed 22 shots—more than in any Premier League game against Arsenal since their 8-2 victory in 2011. The front line no longer looked passive or predictable. Arsenal’s defence was clearly unsettled by United’s quick forward play, often staying deeper to contain the threat.

Mason Mount also impressed, further highlighting the improved quality in the squad.

Room for Growth but Encouraging Progress

The defeat still exposed some concerns. Goalkeeper Altay Bayindir’s error led to the winning goal, and the midfield might need further strengthening—particularly to balance Bruno Fernandes with a more athletic partner.

However, despite the result, this was a performance full of intent and structure. Amorim’s team looked far more cohesive and confident than they did last season. Their commitment to the manager’s system is growing, and the new players are beginning to integrate well.

Although there’s still work to do, Manchester United showed against Arsenal that they’re heading in the right direction—and opponents will take note.
