Zimbabwean singer Tsungai Tsikirai delivered a standout performance at the first-ever Doek and Slay UK edition, held last Saturday at Colesdale Farm in London. The event, organised by Event Hulks, featured a lineup of prominent African artists and attracted music lovers from across the city.
Tsikirai, performing with her band, showcased a repertoire of songs from her childhood, including Mhondoro/Dzinomwa, Nhemamsasa, and Hautengwe, which feature on her latest album. The crowd responded enthusiastically, dancing and singing along as the artist delivered her set with powerful vocals.
During her performance, Tsikirai paid tribute to Busi Ncube, a Zimbabwean music pioneer and her former mentor, acknowledging Ncube’s contribution to promoting women in music. “Gratitude is a must and we must celebrate those that inspire us,” Tsikirai told the audience. Fans have dubbed her the “African Queen” following her album launch in Harare earlier this year.
The Doek and Slay UK event featured other artists including Feli Nandi, Trevor Dongo, Tocky Vibes, Delroy Shewe, and Intotal Band. Sponsors such as Nyaradzo Group and Remitley supported the event, providing financial and logistical assistance.
Tsikirai’s all-female band lineup highlighted female talent in the music industry and underscored the event’s historic significance. “I wanted to work with these talented ladies to make history and launch Doek and Slay UK in a meaningful way,” she said.
Beyond entertainment, Tsikirai continues to use her platform to promote Zimbabwean and Southern African culture, as well as to raise awareness on social issues, including mental health. Earlier this year, she led workshops on music, dance, and language at Central Washington University in the United States, organised by Zimfest USA.
Looking ahead, Tsikirai is scheduled to host Mabiko: Celebrate Africa on 1 November at the Bicester Hotel Golf and Spa. The annual event will feature African fashion, cuisine, and live music performances, including soukous, marimba, imbube, and Afro-Jazz.
