Washington, D.C. – President Donald Trump has announced that the 2026 Group of 20 (G20) summit will take place at his Trump National Doral resort near Miami, Florida, a decision that has sparked renewed scrutiny over potential conflicts of interest.
The announcement, made in early September 2025, follows Trump’s confirmation that the United States will host the summit, marking the first U.S.-based G20 meeting since 2009.
Trump described Doral as the “best location” for bringing together world leaders, citing its proximity to Miami International Airport, winter-season hospitality capacity, and extensive resort facilities, which include multiple golf courses, a spa, luxury accommodations, and a 2,230 m² grand ballroom.
The president stressed that the resort would operate “at-cost” during the summit and claimed that neither he nor his family would financially benefit.
This move recalls a similar plan during Trump’s first term to host the 2020 G7 summit at Doral, which was ultimately abandoned amid bipartisan concerns over possible violations of the emoluments clause.
Purchased in 2012 for $150 million (approximately R2.73 billion), Trump National Doral has been a central feature of such discussions, given its high-profile infrastructure like the Blue Monster golf course.
Critics, however, argue that hosting a taxpayer-funded international summit at a property owned by the sitting president inevitably raises ethical questions, especially with anticipated revenue from hospitality services.
Trump also confirmed he will skip the 2025 G20 summit in South Africa, citing political differences, and that Vice President J.D. Vance will represent the United States.
While details of the 2026 summit’s guest list remain under discussion, the participation of nations such as Russia and China is uncertain, given ongoing international legal complexities, including the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin.
