Musi Maimane, a prominent opposition figure in South Africa, has sharply criticized liberation movements across the African continent, specifically naming Zimbabwe’s ruling ZANU PF and President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Maimane attributes the ongoing immigration challenges faced by South Africa to the governance failures of these parties and leaders.
South Africa has recently experienced a surge in xenophobic sentiment and attacks, primarily directed at foreign nationals from other African countries. These individuals are frequently accused of contributing to crime, usurping local employment opportunities, and straining public services.
Various anti-migrant organizations have organized protests, intensifying pressure on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s administration to address the increasing influx of undocumented immigrants.
Maimane accused liberation parties of betraying their foundational promises to the populace through widespread corruption and ineffective governance.
“Liberation movements have devastated Africa. They have betrayed the commitments they made to their people. They have devolved into a syndicate of criminality, corruption, and cronyism,” Maimane stated emphatically.
He further asserted, “The true adversary of South Africa is Emmerson Mnangagwa, not Kudzai, the Uber driver. The real enemy of South Africa is Yoweri Museveni, not Kizito, the barber.”
“The enemy of South Africa is the NRM, FRELIMO, ZANU PF, and not Fiona, the desperate and impoverished African woman who fled these corrupt and violent regimes in Africa and is now cleaning toilets in our homes as a domestic worker,” Maimane elaborated, drawing a stark contrast between political leaders and ordinary citizens.
Thousands of Zimbabweans have sought economic refuge in South Africa, with many utilizing the permeable border between the two nations to enter unlawfully.
Both the South African government and the governing African National Congress (ANC) have faced scrutiny for allegedly prioritizing diplomatic relations with ZANU PF over confronting the Zimbabwean leadership regarding the root causes of migration.
Maimane emphasized that regional leaders, including President Mnangagwa, must be held accountable for fostering economic and political environments that compel their citizens to emigrate.
He concluded, “Let us confront the genuine antagonist of South Africa. The actual reason behind our immigration crisis. Let’s address this directly.”
“The reason for these unmanageable levels of immigration is that these leaders – Museveni, Mnangagwa, and Chapo – have ruined their home nations and oppressed their citizens.”
“Regrettably, they have received support and camaraderie from the ANC. This dynamic must cease.”
