Pedzai Scott Sakupwanya, president of Scottland FC, has pledged US$100,000 to Simba Bhora to support the club’s upcoming CAF Champions League preliminary round tie against Eswatini’s Nsingizini Hotspurs.
The financial support comes as Simba Bhora prepares for its debut in Africa’s top club competition. The first leg is scheduled for Sunday at Obed Itai Chilume Stadium in Francistown, Botswana, after their home ground in Shamva was deemed unfit by CAF.
Sakupwanya, who also sponsors Simba Bhora through his company Better Brands, said he would provide further backing if the team advances. “We want Simba Bhora to represent Zimbabwe proudly on the continental stage. If they reach the next round, I will also cover the players’ winning bonuses,” he stated.
The donation comes at a crucial time as Simba Bhora faces significant travel and accommodation costs. The return leg in Eswatini is scheduled for the following weekend, with the aggregate winner progressing to the next round.
Sakupwanya’s contribution has sparked debate among football fans. While some have praised his support for Zimbabwean football, others questioned whether it is appropriate for a club president to fund another team in the same league.
Critics argued that such funds could instead be directed toward improving football infrastructure in Zimbabwe, noting the country frequently hosts matches abroad due to inadequate stadiums.
