Zimbabwean football star Ronald Chitiyo on Saturday, December 20, 2025, gave back to his community by hosting a successful Under-18 soccer tournament at Batanayi Primary School in Epworth, aimed at promoting a strong anti-drug message among youths.
The inaugural Ronald Chitiyo Under-18 Tournament, held under the theme “Say No to Drugs,” brought together seven junior teams, offering a platform for young players to showcase their talent while reinforcing positive life choices through sport.
The event attracted several notable football personalities, including Ronald Pfumbidzai of Scottland FC, Blessing Moyo of Simba Bhora, former Warriors winger Talent Chawapiwa, and Ferg Chivhayo, brother to businessman Wicknell Chivhayo. Their presence added value and inspiration to the young participants.
Renowned entertainer Comic Elder attended as the Guest of Honour, bringing energy and excitement to the event. Addressing the gathering, Comic Elder urged young people to remain focused on building their futures and avoid the dangers of drug abuse, emphasising discipline, hard work and self-belief.
On the pitch, Epworth Pirates Soccer Academy emerged champions after edging Scottland Juniors 4–2 on penalties in a thrilling final, much to the delight of the local crowd.
Speaking after the tournament, Chitiyo expressed satisfaction with the turnout and overall success of the event.
> “I’m very happy with the success of this first edition tournament, especially with the turnout of fans and players who came to support the boys showcasing their talents,” said Chitiyo.
Former Warriors winger Talent Chawapiwa also praised the initiative, saying Chitiyo had set an example for fellow footballers.
> “Rooney has set the pace for all of us. We are motivated to follow in his footsteps and give back to our communities,” said Chawapiwa.
The tournament marked a significant step in using football as a tool for community development and youth empowerment, reinforcing Chitiyo’s commitment to nurturing young talent and promoting positive values beyond the game.
