The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has called on parents, schools, transport operators, motorists and communities to take extra precautions to protect learners as schools begin the third term on Tuesday, 8 September 2026.
ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said on Monday that parents, guardians and school authorities should ensure that children, particularly those travelling to boarding schools, use safe and dependable transport.
He advised learners to avoid travelling at night whenever possible and urged schools and families to hire only vehicles that are roadworthy and properly equipped to carry passengers.
Nyathi also cautioned bus owners and drivers against overloading vehicles or transporting learners alongside goods and luggage in a manner that could compromise their safety. Drivers, he said, must obey traffic regulations and avoid speeding, dangerous overtaking and negligent driving. He further warned motorists not to drive after consuming alcohol or taking prohibited drugs.

The police appealed to all motorists to reduce their speed and remain alert near schools, bus stops, pedestrian crossings and other locations where learners are likely to be present.
Beyond road safety, the ZRP urged parents, guardians and school authorities to remain vigilant against criminals who may target learners or school premises. Schools were also advised not to keep substantial amounts of cash on site.
“Parents and guardians are encouraged to make use of banks and other approved financial institutions when paying school fees and other school-related charges,” Nyathi said.
Police will intensify traffic enforcement, road-safety operations and general patrols throughout the country during the return-to-school period. The measures are intended to protect learners as they travel to and from school and move within their communities.
