Herentals extended their impressive run in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League with a 3-1 victory over Kwekwe United at Rufaro Stadium on Sunday.
The result moves the team, known as “The Students,” up to sixth place on the league table with 38 points.
The hosts took the lead in the 19th minute through John Zhuwawo, but Kwekwe United responded just over ten minutes later when Proud Gorekore leveled the score. Herentals regained control before halftime as Kundai Sangara fired them ahead in the 43rd minute. Prince Mahembe sealed the win with a third goal in the 66th minute.
In Bulawayo, Highlanders were forced to settle for a point after a 1-1 draw against Ngezi Platinum Stars at Barbourfields Stadium. Ngezi took the lead through Tinashe Muvhudzi in the 25th minute, but Highlanders struck back late on, with Reason Sibanda equalizing via a powerful header in the 79th minute.
Elsewhere, CAPS United suffered another setback in their fight to avoid relegation, falling 2-1 to Bikita Minerals at Gibbo Stadium. The hosts got their goals from Tadiwanashe Murasiramwa and Spencer Mugariri, while Nyasha Chintuli netted a consolation for Makepekepe.
With only 10 fixtures left in the 2025 season, the race to avoid relegation remains intense. A mere 10 points separate the teams placed ninth through seventeenth, and the country’s traditional football giants — Highlanders, CAPS United, and Dynamos — are all uncomfortably close to the drop zone.
Currently, Highlanders sit on 29 points, CAPS United have 28, and Dynamos, despite a recent victory, are second from bottom with just 19 points. Historically, teams have needed around 40 points to guarantee safety — a target that’s quickly approaching as the season winds down.
