A dark cloud has settled over the Mucheke D suburb in Masvingo following the tragic death of an 11-month-old boy who drowned in a water-filled dish at his family home.
The devastating incident, which occurred on March 7, took place while the child’s mother was reportedly occupied with routine household duties. According to reports from TellZim News, the infant had been playing nearby in the yard before the tragedy unfolded.
Masvingo provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa, confirmed the details of the accident. He explained that the mother became alarmed when she realized her son was no longer within her line of sight. Following a frantic search of the premises, she discovered the toddler unresponsive in a dish filled with water.
Despite a quick response to get the child to Masvingo District Hospital, medical staff unfortunately pronounced the infant dead upon arrival.
Police Issue Urgent Safety Warning
In the wake of this tragedy, Inspector Dhewa issued a stern reminder to parents and caregivers regarding the hidden dangers of open water containers around the home.
“We urge parents and guardians to always supervise young children, especially around water containers such as buckets, dishes, and tubs,” Dhewa stated. “Such incidents can occur within a very short period of time.”
The toddler’s body was transferred to the hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.
