Gray Homes Construction Director Annavestah Mudiwa Faces Renewed Fraud Allegations Amidst Claims of Impunity

Harare, Zimbabwe – Annavestah Mudiwa, the Director and CEO of Gray Homes Construction Company, is once again at the center of controversy, facing fresh allegations of defrauding clients and exhibiting an uncooperative demeanor that has led some to describe her as “untouchable.” This comes as multiple reports suggest a pattern of unfulfilled contracts, elusive communication, and a disregard for agreed-upon payment plans, leaving clients in financial distress.

Client’s Ordeal: A Cottage Unbuilt, Funds Unrecovered

One aggrieved client, recounted their distressing experience with Gray Homes Construction. In July 2025, they responded to a promotion and entered into an agreement with Mrs. Mudiwa for the construction of a two-bedroom cottage, with payments to be made in monthly installments. The client diligently paid US$10,760, reaching the contractual 70% threshold required for construction to commence.

However, in March 2026, Mrs. Mudiwa allegedly informed the client of an unexpected increase in fuel prices, unilaterally raising the total project cost to US$22,000 – a significant deviation from the original agreement. She then requested an extension and insisted on continued installment payments despite no work having started on site. “This did not make sense to us,” the client stated.

Attempts to contact Mrs. Mudiwa became increasingly difficult, with her frequently claiming to be in meetings and failing to return calls. Faced with poor service and a lack of progress, the client sought to cancel the agreement and requested a refund. Following this, Mrs. Mudiwa reportedly became rude and uncooperative. With no work done on the site, the client initiated legal action to recover their funds.

Their lawyer dispatched a demand letter, which went unanswered. A subsequent visit to Gray Homes’ former office on Longden Avenue, Harare, revealed that the company had vacated the premises the previous year. Mrs. Mudiwa has since refused to provide her new contact details or the company’s current address, effectively disappearing from communication. The client expressed profound distress, stating, “It is very painful because we worked hard and made sacrifices, only for someone to take our money and then disappear.”

Broken Promises: A Failed Refund Plan

The client’s ordeal did not end there. Following media reports and social media outcry, Mrs. Mudiwa proposed a refund payment plan, which the client accepted in good faith. Under this agreement, she committed to paying US$3,000 by the end of May. However, she failed to honor this commitment. After two weeks of persistent follow-up calls and repeated assurances, she eventually made a partial payment of only US$1,000.

Since this partial payment, Mrs. Mudiwa has reportedly gone silent, ignoring messages and phone calls. Her failure to fulfill the agreed payment plan has left the outstanding balance unpaid, further deepening the client’s financial woes and reinforcing the perception of her evasive tactics.

This is not the first time Annavestah Mudiwa and Gray Homes Construction have faced serious accusations. In 2025, Mrs. Mudiwa and her husband, Gray Mudiwa, were granted bail after facing multiple fraud charges, including allegations of defrauding Vice President Constantino Chiwenga’s wife, Miniyothabo, in a case involving an uncompleted mansion, warehouse, and shopping mall . They were also accused of defrauding Overexport of hardware goods worth US$79,000 .

Despite these legal entanglements, Mrs. Mudiwa has often publicly disputed allegations, as seen in a June 2026 report by The Harare Times, where she claimed a couple’s account was inaccurate, stating she had “the truth from this matter” . While Gray Homes Construction has, in some instances, been compelled to issue refunds, such as a US$2,800 payment to a Kariba woman in February 2026 after her tearful video went viral , the recurring nature of complaints and Mrs. Mudiwa’s alleged unresponsiveness continue to fuel public concern.

The repeated allegations, coupled with her apparent ability to evade accountability through company relocations and communication blackouts, contribute to a growing sentiment among affected clients that Mrs. Mudiwa operates with a sense of impunity, leaving a trail of unfulfilled promises and financial hardship.
