Zimbabweans Return Home Amidst Anti-Migrant Tensions in South Africa

Beitbridge Border Post, Zimbabwe – A significant number of Zimbabwean nationals are voluntarily returning home from South Africa, driven by escalating anti-migrant sentiments and protests in various parts of the neighbouring country.

Between May 28 and June 27 this year, a total of 35,403 Zimbabweans independently crossed back into the country through the Beitbridge Border Post. In contrast, 4,795 individuals received assistance from the Zimbabwean government during the same period.

This surge in self-repatriation is largely attributed to growing apprehension among Zimbabweans residing in South African townships. Reports from the Civil Protection Unit indicate that local vigilante groups have issued ultimatums to undocumented migrants, demanding their departure by Tuesday, June 30 .

Despite assurances from the South African Government that no official deadline exists, the prevailing uncertainty has compelled many families to hastily leave the country. Buses continue to arrive daily at Beitbridge Border Post, primarily from South Africa’s Gauteng, Western Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal provinces.

The Government of Zimbabwe has affirmed its commitment to monitoring the welfare of its citizens in South Africa amidst the ongoing anti-migrant tensions. “The Government of Zimbabwe is actively monitoring the welfare of its citizens in South Africa amid ongoing anti-migrant tensions and has established coordination mechanisms to facilitate their safe repatriation, reception and reintegration,” a recent report stated .

In a notable development, approximately 3,000 Zimbabweans were relocated from the consulate to Epping on Sunday, having requested repatriation ahead of the June 30 deadline imposed by the anti-illegal immigrant group “March and March” . Officials at the repatriation centres are systematically logging arrivals before arranging travel documents in coordination with the Zimbabwean consulate. Many of these returnees, including women and young children, have faced harsh conditions, with some spending nights in the cold while awaiting processing.

Thousands of young Zimbabwean men are still awaiting processing, highlighting the scale of the ongoing repatriation efforts.
