Dynamos’ fight to avoid relegation received a significant boost yesterday following a 2-0 victory over GreenFuel at Rufaro Stadium — marking their third consecutive league win.
Second-half goals from Jairos Kasondo and a penalty by Temptation Chiwunga secured the much-needed points for the Harare giants, lifting team morale as the season enters its decisive phase.
Head coach Kelvin Kaindu, who has been at the heart of Dynamos’ recent resurgence, praised his players for showing resilience — particularly after a challenging first half.
“Credit to the team for grinding out a result and scoring twice,” said Kaindu. “We’ve clearly made progress, though I felt this was an average performance overall. We expected a tough game, and that’s exactly what we got.”
Dynamos had to weather an early storm, with GreenFuel dominating the opening 45 minutes. However, Kaindu said the halftime message was clear.
“I reminded the players we still had 45 minutes to change things. If GreenFuel couldn’t capitalize in the first half, we knew we had a shot at controlling the second.”
He added that the emphasis was on character rather than perfect play — and his players delivered.
Meanwhile, GreenFuel coach Godfrey Tamirepi lamented his team’s missed chances and lapse in concentration after the break.
“We controlled the first half, but failed to convert. Then we gave away too many free kicks in the second half — it cost us,” he said.
The win was far from ordinary for Dynamos. It marked their fifth consecutive victory in all competitions and further fueled hopes of avoiding the drop — a scenario that seemed far-fetched just weeks ago.
Despite the win, Dynamos remain second from the bottom, but now sit just three points behind 13th-placed Triangle. With the table tightly packed, a few more positive results could see them leapfrog into mid-table territory.
Yesterday’s game mirrored their season: a shaky start followed by a determined comeback. GreenFuel, with the lively Tinotenda Meke and experienced campaigners like Rodwell Chinyengetere and Clive Rupiya, created several first-half chances but failed to break through.
Dynamos endured, and their second-half transformation was striking. They played with intent and precision, quickly turning the tide. Kasondo opened the scoring with a well-timed header from a set-piece, before Chiwunga doubled the lead from the penalty spot after a handball incident in the box.
The momentum firmly shifted in Dynamos’ favor. Veteran midfielder Denver Mukamba nearly added a third with a superb free-kick that struck the upright.
As GreenFuel pushed forward late on, Dynamos defended with grit, refusing to concede.
While survival is not yet assured, this latest win sends a strong message: Dynamos are not going down without a fight. The mission to stay up is alive — and gathering pace.
