CHIVAYO REWARDS WARRIORS WITH US$250,000 AFTER AFCON EXIT

Zimbabwe Warriors’ AFCON 2025 campaign came to an end on a disappointing note following a narrow 3–2 defeat to South Africa, but the team’s fighting spirit has earned them recognition beyond the results.

Despite failing to progress further in the tournament, the Warriors have been praised for their courage, resilience and competitive display against some of the continent’s strongest sides. Their spirited performances, particularly against higher-ranked opponents, left many supporters encouraged by the team’s growth and renewed belief.

Prominent businessman and Warriors benefactor Wicknell Chivayo has publicly commended the national team for their effort, describing their AFCON journey as a win in its own right.

“Where others see a loss, I see bravery and effort,” Chivayo said. “Reaching a stage where you are competing with the best on the continent is, in itself, an achievement that deserves recognition.”

Chivayo revealed that he had pledged a US$2 million reward should the Warriors lift the AFCON trophy. Although that target was not met, he announced a goodwill gesture of US$250,000 in appreciation of the team’s commitment and fighting spirit.

“Vakuru vakati yatsika yanwa,” he said, emphasising the importance of acknowledging effort and progress. “The Warriors may not have brought the trophy home, but they lifted the Zimbabwean flag with pride. For that, they deserve to be celebrated.”

Zimbabwe’s AFCON campaign also marked a milestone, with the team scoring in all their group matches — a first in the nation’s AFCON history — further highlighting signs of progress under challenging circumstances.

Chivayo urged Zimbabweans to rally behind the team, stressing that success in football is a journey marked by lessons as much as victories.

“Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn,” he said. “The journey continues, and next time we come back stronger.”

As the Warriors return home, attention now shifts to building on the positives from AFCON 2025, with renewed calls for unity, support and long-term investment in Zimbabwean football.
