CAPS United’s resurgence under Zambian head coach Ian Bakala gained further momentum on Sunday as they clinched a narrow but impressive 1–0 win against a heavily favored Scottland side in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League, held at Rufaro Stadium.
Taking a bold approach, Bakala named all of CAPS United’s new mid-season signings in his starting XI—and the gamble paid off. One of those debutants, Congolese striker Crispin Mutshimba Kope Mugalu, emerged as the hero, heading in the game’s only goal in the 36th minute.
Also making their first appearances were Zambian defender Chitoshi Chinga and ex-Warriors winger Ishmael Wadi, recently re-signed by the Harare club.
Scottland, coached by Tonderai Ndiraya, also unveiled their own high-profile addition—Terence Dzvukamanja—who returned to Zimbabwe after spending seven years playing professionally in South Africa.
Following the match, Bakala spoke confidently about Mugalu’s performance:
“This is the third club I’ve coached him at, so I know what he brings to the pitch. He’s a proven worker, regardless of his age. I believe in his abilities. It’s just the first match, so we won’t judge too quickly, but I’ll keep pushing him to improve.”
Elsewhere in the League
Sunday’s other fixtures saw Highlanders and Kwekwe United battle to a 1–1 draw, while Triangle United and TelOne also ended level at 1–1.
On Saturday, GreenFuel fell 1–0 to Ngezi Platinum Stars, Simba Bhora drew 1–1 with ZPC Kariba, MWOS narrowly beat Bikita Minerals 1–0, Herentals stunned Dynamos 2–0, and Chicken Inn edged Yadah 2–1.
