Judge Delays Decision on Blessing Mhlanga's Bail Pending Review of Video Evidence Photocredit- Kudakwashe Emma-Louise Zihonye
Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) journalist Blessed Mhlanga plans to challenge a court decision denying him bail, which resulted in his detention until March 14, 2025, according to a report by ZimLive.
Mhlanga is accused of circulating information that could incite violence or cause property damage. The allegations stem from interviews he conducted with Blessed Geza, a war veteran known for his vocal criticism of President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Geza, who is currently evading authorities, faces multiple charges, including theft, undermining the president’s authority, and inciting public violence.
Harare Magistrate Farai Gwitima refused to grant Mhlanga bail on Friday, expressing concerns that the journalist might interfere with witnesses, including his colleagues at AMH, or repeat the alleged offenses. The magistrate also warned that his release could trigger unrest and threaten national stability.
“The issue is not merely the gathering and dissemination of information, but rather the intent behind it,” said Gwitima. “There is a real risk of interference, as some witnesses are yet to provide statements, and the content in question has the potential to incite violence.”
Gwitima ruled that the prosecution had provided strong reasons to justify Mhlanga’s continued detention, leading to the bail denial.
Mhlanga’s lawyer, Chris Mhike, expressed disappointment with the ruling, stating that they respect the court’s decision but strongly disagree with its findings. “We had hoped for a favorable outcome, but we will be filing an appeal at the High Court as soon as possible,” said Mhike.
Meanwhile, the United States Embassy in Zimbabwe condemned both Mhlanga’s arrest and the decision to deny him bail. In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the embassy urged Zimbabwean authorities to uphold press freedom and ensure journalists are granted their constitutional rights, including access to bail and freedom of speech.
