Zimbabwe Police Adopt Drone Technology to Tackle Sophisticated Crime

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is ramping up the use of advanced technology to address increasingly complex criminal operations.

This development comes as 27 police officers graduated in Harare on Wednesday with certifications as drone pilots, following intensive training in unmanned aerial systems.

National police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, highlighted that the milestone reflects the ZRP’s ongoing efforts to modernize its operations and align with international policing standards.

“In line with our drive to integrate technology into law enforcement, 27 officers were awarded drone pilot certificates today at the ZRP Sports Club,” Commissioner Nyathi said in a statement.

He added, “The Police Commissioner-General’s initiative to upgrade the force through tools like the Electronic Traffic Management System and advanced crime-fighting technologies is clearly bearing fruit.”

Drones are proving transformative for law enforcement. They enhance surveillance, assist with crowd control, and support crime prevention at public events and in large areas.

These aerial tools also help track suspects, monitor traffic flow, and provide aerial views of crime scenes. Equipped with facial recognition, they can identify persons of interest within crowds.

In search-and-rescue missions, drones with thermal imaging and high-resolution zoom capabilities allow for swift identification of missing individuals or fleeing suspects across vast terrains. Similarly, at crime scenes, drone footage aids investigators in reconstructing events and gathering evidence.

Zimbabwe has already begun deploying drones for border security, using them to monitor and reduce crimes such as smuggling and human trafficking.

Additionally, some drones are outfitted with sensors that can detect explosives or dangerous substances from a distance—helping protect both officers and the public from harm.
