Harare, Zimbabwe – Christopher Mutsvangwa, the spokesperson for the ruling Zanu-PF party, has unequivocally dismissed any presidential succession ambitions within the party until after 2030, a pronouncement that effectively quashes premature leadership aspirations and exacerbates existing internal political friction.
These assertive remarks emerge amidst persistent reports of factionalism within Zanu-PF, particularly concerning the contentious Constitutional Amendment Bill Number 3. This legislative proposal has become a significant point of contention, highlighting a deepening schism between various power blocs within the party.
Sources indicate that the prevailing tensions involve a faction aligned with Vice President Constantino Chiwenga and certain elements among war veterans, who reportedly oppose any perceived extension of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s tenure beyond the constitutionally stipulated timeframe.
Addressing the press at the party headquarters, Mutsvangwa sternly rebuffed any attempts at early succession maneuvering.
“If you have ambitions as a faction or whoever trying to take over from him just wait for 2030,” Mutsvangwa declared. “It will still be there just make sure you keep healthy and… maintain your standing in the party.”
He further emphasized that internal leadership contests must not be permitted to impede ongoing constitutional processes.
“Do not try to make noises between now and 2030 because the door has been closed,” he asserted, signaling a definitive stance from the party leadership.
Mutsvangwa also clarified that the party was deliberately exercising restraint in public commentary regarding the amendment process, noting that internal party structures were actively engaged in consultations linked to parliamentary proceedings.
“We have a team, our commissariat department and administrative department. They are part of the consultations of Parliament,” he stated, underscoring that the matter remains an integral part of the legislative agenda.
