Mpilo Central Hospital is set for a major facelift that will transform it into a modern medical centre, as the Second Republic continues to place healthcare at the heart of national development.
The refurbishment is being carried out by Prevail Group International, the same construction firm behind the ongoing works at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare.
In a statement, the contractor said the work at Mpilo would cover all key sections of the hospital.
“We are doing a full refurbishment at Mpilo, including the main hospital wing and several departments. Basically, it will be a brand-new facility once we’re done,” the company said.
The development has been welcomed across Bulawayo, with patients and residents expressing excitement over the long-awaited transformation.
Mpilo, one of the country’s largest referral hospitals, has for years struggled with ageing infrastructure, overcrowding, and equipment breakdowns. The upgrade, many say, marks a turning point.
“This is wonderful news. I have been coming to Mpilo for years, and sometimes we had to queue for hours because some wards were closed. With this refurbishment, things will definitely improve,” said Patricia Mhlanga, a chronic patient from Emganwini.
“It gives us confidence to know that the hospital we rely on is being modernised. We just want to see clean wards, working equipment, and motivated nurses,” said Tafadzwa Moyo, a patient waiting for surgery.
“I’m happy the government is finally giving attention to Mpilo. We’ve seen pictures of hospitals being upgraded elsewhere, and it’s good to know Bulawayo is not being left behind,” said Blessing Sibanda, a father whose child receives treatment at the hospital.
“For some of us who travel from rural areas, Mpilo is the only place we can get specialised treatment. The new look will mean better care and more dignity for patients,” said Gogo Esther Dube from Tsholotsho.
Health workers have also praised the project, saying it will create a more efficient working environment and boost staff morale.
“A better hospital means better service delivery. This project is a big step toward improving the health system for everyone,” said Nurse Sipho Dlamini, who works at a local clinic.
Once completed, the Mpilo refurbishment is expected to improve access to quality healthcare for thousands across the southern region and ease pressure on other major hospitals in the country.
