High Court Halts Tinashe Mugabe’s DNA Show in Landmark Privacy Decision

In a groundbreaking ruling that has reverberated through Zimbabwe’s legal and entertainment sectors, the High Court has mandated the immediate cessation of Tinashe Mugabe’s controversial and widely popular Closure DNA Show.

The court determined that the program’s public disclosure of paternity test results represents a severe infringement on individuals’ privacy rights.

In an unexpected shift from his earlier ruling in 2021, which had permitted the show to air, Justice Joseph Mafusire issued a stern condemnation of the program, asserting:

“Though the public may find amusement in the misfortunes of others, the court cannot approve the televised degradation of citizens, particularly vulnerable women and children. DNA testing is a tool for science, not a spectacle for entertainment.”

The court’s decision referenced several instances where participants claimed to have been pressured into appearing on the show, only for their most intimate family matters to be aired for public consumption. One anonymous mother shared her painful experience:

“They promised me assistance, but instead, they turned me into a laughingstock. My child’s father rejected him live on TV. Now we face ridicule in our community.”

Legal experts argue that this ruling sets a significant precedent for privacy protection in Zimbabwe’s media landscape.

Unyielding, Tinashe Mugabe addressed the press outside the Harare High Court, flanked by his supporters chanting, “DNA! DNA!” He passionately declared:

“This isn’t about privacy – it’s about suppressing the truth!” Mugabe exclaimed. “Those in power don’t want their secrets to be revealed, but I will not stop. We are filing an appeal TODAY!”

His company, Global DNA Zimbabwe, issued an official statement accusing the judiciary of yielding to political pressure, pledging to take the case to the Supreme Court. The statement further argued:

“Over 87% of our cases have successfully reunited fathers with their children. If the show is cancelled, countless families will remain without answers.”
