Shurugwi Man Remanded for Allegedly Insulting President Mnangagwa

A 26-year-old man from Shurugwi has been placed in remand prison after allegedly making derogatory remarks about President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Tinashe Chigiya, a resident of Makandire Village under Chief Nhema, appeared before Magistrate Sithabile Zungula, who ruled that he remain in custody until his trial resumes.

According to the prosecution, led by Kwanele Njini, the incident occurred on January 27, 2025, at Musavezi River. Chigiya allegedly blamed Mnangagwa and ZANU PF supporters for allowing Chinese companies to conduct sand extraction in the river, an activity he claimed had made the area hazardous for children and polluted the water.

The case escalated further when Chigiya reportedly assaulted Audreck Mhaka, a ZANU PF Ward 8 Councillor in Shurugwi. He is accused of punching and head-butting Mhaka while criticizing him for alleged incompetence.

Chigiya remains in custody as the court prepares for the next hearing in his case.
