President Mnangagwa Champions Home-Grown Education for Zimbabwe’s Future

Harare, Zimbabwe – President Dr. Emmerson Mnangagwa recently emphasized that an education system nurturing local talent and solutions is absolutely vital for Zimbabwe’s long-term growth.

Speaking at a fundraising dinner in Harare for the ED-UNZA Scholarship Programme, the President highlighted the nation’s drive to strengthen its skills base in key sectors.

The ED-UNZA Scholarship, launched in 2019 with the President as its patron, offers a lifeline to bright students who, despite their academic prowess, face financial hardship. It provides crucial scholarships, especially for orphans and underprivileged learners, opening doors for them to pursue higher education.

Addressing the guests, President Mnangagwa pointed out the programme’s evolving focus. It’s now deliberately channeling support towards fields critical for economic transformation, such as medicine and various science and technology disciplines. He believes that by investing wisely in relevant education and skill development, Zimbabwe – and indeed the wider region – is laying a solid groundwork for lasting industrialization, innovation, and modernization.

Since its beginning, the scholarship has already helped over 90 students. Interestingly, some have even studied at the University of Zambia, the very institution where President Mnangagwa earned his law degree.

The programme has also expanded its reach, now supporting students at local universities across a range of professional fields.

President Mnangagwa wrapped up by calling for stronger partnerships. He urged the private sector, development partners, and philanthropic organizations to join forces and expand the initiative’s impact.

His message was clear: financial barriers should never stand in the way of talented learners realizing their full potential, and they must be supported every step of the way.
