President Emmerson Mnangagwa has urged Zimbabweans to draw inspiration from the sacrifice and selflessness of liberation war heroes as the nation works towards becoming an upper middle-income economy by 2030.
Speaking at the 45th Heroes Day commemorations at the National Heroes Acre in Harare, the President said all citizens — young and old, in both rural and urban areas — have a responsibility to build a modern, industrialised country.
He encouraged Zimbabweans to push beyond the Vision 2030 target, embrace innovation, and pursue greater achievements, stressing that unity, patriotism, and hard work are key to national prosperity.
Highlighting the Second Republic’s development programmes, the President cited growth in agriculture, manufacturing, and mining; ongoing infrastructure upgrades; and reforms aimed at boosting education, health, and rural development.
He reported that Zimbabwe’s GDP has grown from US\$16 billion in 2018 to US\$45.7 billion, with a projected 6% economic growth for 2025, despite challenges such as sanctions, climate change, and volatile commodity prices.
Mnangagwa commended farmers for record production in crops such as maize, wheat, and tobacco, as well as livestock and milk output, attributing these gains to perseverance and land reform initiatives.
The President also pointed to manufacturing sector growth, investment in renewable energy, road and airport upgrades, expansion of ICT access, and policies to strengthen technical and vocational skills.
He reaffirmed Zimbabwe’s commitment to protecting sovereignty, promoting engagement and re-engagement, and contributing to global peacekeeping and mediation efforts.
The commemorations were attended by First Lady Auxilia Mnangagwa, Vice Presidents Constantino Chiwenga and Kembo Mohadi, senior government officials, diplomats, service chiefs, and families of liberation heroes.
