Police have confirmed that three pedestrians lost their lives in two separate road traffic accidents that occurred over the weekend in Mutare and Harare.
In the first incident, which happened on 9 January 2026 along the Harare–Mutare highway near the 239km peg, two pedestrians were killed. According to Zimbabwe Republic Police national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, a Toyota Lexus travelling behind a Shacman truck attempted to overtake at a junction as the truck was turning right.
The Lexus clipped the truck, lost control, veered off the road and struck two pedestrians, who died on the spot. The truck driver reportedly fled the scene. The bodies were taken to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital for post-mortem examinations.
The second accident occurred on 10 January 2026 along the Harare–Masvingo road. A 15-tonne Mercedes-Benz truck towing an empty trailer was travelling toward Harare’s CBD when the trailer detached and hit a Toyota Hiace commuter omnibus carrying 13 passengers. The trailer then left the road and struck three pedestrians, killing one instantly. The injured were rushed to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for treatment.
Police are continuing investigations into both incidents.
