Renowned Hollywood filmmaker Terry Benedict, best known for producing the Oscar-winning film Hacksaw Ridge, is currently in Zimbabwe exploring potential film projects that could spotlight the country’s iconic tourist destinations.
Benedict, who has spent years researching lesser-known Zimbabwean narratives, is in Harare engaging with local stakeholders to identify stories that could translate to the global screen.
Speaking after a series of meetings in both Harare and Bulawayo, Benedict revealed his interest in developing a film centered around Zimbabwean history and culture. He emphasized the importance of showcasing landmarks such as Victoria Falls, the Matobo Hills, and the Great Zimbabwe ruins.
“There’s a compelling Zimbabwean story we’re keen to adapt for film. We’ve spent significant time connecting with community leaders and learning about the country’s rich heritage,” Benedict said. He also highlighted his visit to see Honourable Scott, noting the MP’s commitment to serving his hometown through healthcare initiatives.
Benedict is also eyeing the potential for sport-themed films, especially around football, as a vehicle to promote Zimbabwe on the global stage.
“The entertainment world is becoming more interconnected. Africa, in particular, is emerging as an exciting landscape for storytelling,” he said. “When I first learned about this football story involving Zimbabwe eight years ago, I didn’t know much about the country. But since then, I’ve discovered how many powerful and inspiring stories are waiting to be told.”
His goals align with Zimbabwe’s recently launched National Film Strategy (2025–2030), which aims to foster international partnerships and elevate the country’s cultural profile through cinema.
