MWOS FC Fall Short in Title Race, Turn Focus to Chibuku Super Cup

MWOS FC head coach Lloyd Mutasa has attributed his team’s failure to clinch the 2025 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League title to a lack of squad depth, despite an impressive campaign that saw them lead the standings for several weeks.

The Norton-based club currently holds third place with 55 points — trailing table-toppers Scottland FC by six points — with only three matches left in the season.

Their slim title hopes were all but extinguished last weekend following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Scottland FC, a crucial fixture that effectively ended their pursuit of the championship.

Nevertheless, MWOS FC have had an outstanding debut season in Zimbabwe’s top tier. They led the league for over ten weeks and enjoyed a 16-game unbeaten streak, earning widespread praise for their resilience and performance.

Looking back on the season, Mutasa pointed to inadequate pre-season planning and limited player resources as key reasons for their late-season decline.

“A strong foundation is vital. How you prepare before the season, and the quality of players you bring in, all shape your performance,” Mutasa explained. “Our boys went beyond expectations, but when you compare our squad depth with other teams, there’s a noticeable gap. We did our best, but we could only go so far.”

MWOS FC’s entry into the Premier League came through the acquisition of ZPC Hwange’s top-flight status in February 2025 — just weeks before the season kicked off. They had finished second to Scottland FC in the Northern Region Division One League, and used the opportunity to leap into the PSL.

With the league title now out of reach, the club has shifted its focus to the Chibuku Super Cup, where they are targeting a strong finish to cap off their memorable season.

MWOS will face Triangle United in the semi-finals at Ngoni Stadium this Saturday. A win would see them through to the final against either Dynamos or Highlanders.

“Given the support from management and the fans, we are determined to give our all to try and win the Chibuku Super Cup — even though it won’t be easy,” Mutasa added.
