Zimbabwe Football Mourns the Passing of Former Warriors Coach Wieslaw Grabowski

Wieslaw Grabowski, a former coach of the Zimbabwe national football team, has passed away in Poland at the age of 70. His death occurred on Wednesday.

Grabowski was a pivotal figure in the advancement of Zimbabwean football throughout the 1990s. He is widely recognized for his instrumental role in identifying and cultivating some of the nation’s most promising football talents during his ownership of Darryn T Football Club.

His exceptional ability to spot talent was crucial in launching the careers of numerous players who subsequently became prominent figures in Zimbabwean football.

In 1995, Grabowski took on the role of head coach for Zimbabwe’s Under-23 national team, preparing them for the All-Africa Games. Under his leadership, the Young Warriors delivered a remarkable performance, securing the silver medal as runners-up in the tournament.

This team notably featured a generation of athletes who would later achieve star status in Zimbabwean football, including Gift Muzadzi, Alois Bunjira, Edelbert Dinha, Lloyd Chitembwe, and Norman Mapeza.

Grabowski also had a brief tenure as the coach of the senior Zimbabwe national team in 2002.

Journalist Steve Vickers paid tribute to Grabowski, characterizing him as an “extremely colourful and outspoken character.” Vickers’ remarks underscore Grabowski’s vibrant personality and his enduring impact on the local football scene.

His passing follows closely after the death of another former Warriors coach, Roy Barreto, who died in Portugal at 72 years old just a month prior.

Barreto had a distinguished coaching career in Zimbabwe, guiding clubs such as Zimbabwe Saints and Highlanders. He later joined the national team coaching setup, where he also served as an assistant to the late German coach Reinhard Fabisch.

Grabowski’s demise signifies the loss of yet another esteemed personality in Zimbabwean football. His contributions to player development and the national sport will be remembered by countless players and supporters for generations to come.
