Mwenezi Man Arrested for Brutal Murder Over “Insulting” Bride Price

A 47-year-old man from Mwenezi has been arrested in connection with the brutal assault and murder of a lobola intermediary. His accomplices remain on the run.

The altercation began over a disagreement regarding the bride price, which the family found “insulting.” Alex Sibanda (35) had brought an initial amount of US$30 as lobola for the daughter of the accused, Farisai Zhou, which caused significant anger within the family.

In a violent outburst, Farisai Zhou, Simbarashe Zhou, Inzwaishe Majaya, and Isaac Majaya attacked Sibanda, leading to his death. The attack took place on February 11 in Madzvaruse Village, located within Chief Mazhetese’s jurisdiction.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed the incident and reported that Farisai Zhou has been arrested for the murder, while the other suspects remain at large. Police also noted that the assailants used a catapult and logs to repeatedly strike the victim’s body during the assault. The incident stemmed from a dispute involving Sibanda, who was acting as a go-between for the lobola payment for Farisai Zhou’s daughter, who had eloped.
