Mushonga Takes Over as Northern Region Soccer League Boss

Sweeney Mushonga has been voted in as the new chairman of the Northern Region Soccer League, ushering in a fresh era in the administration of football in the region.

Addressing journalists after his election, Mushonga thanked stakeholders for their confidence and set out a clear agenda centred on unity, development and professionalism.

“I am deeply honoured by the trust placed in me by players, coaches and all Northern Region stakeholders,” Mushonga said. “I look forward to serving the league and building on the solid foundation laid by the outgoing chairman, Solomon Mgawazi.”

He said his tenure would focus on strengthening collaboration within the league while embracing innovation and inclusivity as key drivers of growth. “My goal is to create a league that is more connected, forward-thinking and open to everyone,” he said. “I am committed to working tirelessly, serving diligently and listening to all voices.”

Mushonga also identified infrastructure development, higher competition standards and improved commercial partnerships as priorities. “We want to enhance the quality of our competitions, invest in our facilities and attract sponsors to make the league more competitive and appealing,” he said.

Integrity and adherence to fair play, he added, would remain non-negotiable. “I intend to lead with honesty and ensure the Northern Region continues to set the benchmark within Zimbabwean football,” Mushonga said. “All our activities must respect the rules, regulations and spirit of the game.”

Player development and international opportunities will also be pursued. “We are determined to open doors for our players to compete beyond our borders and in stronger leagues,” he said. “Such exposure is vital for the growth of our football.”

On the sponsorship front, Mushonga revealed positive developments. “While we have faced challenges around technical sponsorship, preparations are now at an advanced stage,” he said. “Invitations for a sponsor unveiling are expected to be issued next week, with the event scheduled for Saturday, December 20.”

Meanwhile, Cuthbert Chitima was elected vice chairman of the Northern Soccer Region. He expressed appreciation to those who supported him and pledged to advocate for the interests of clubs and stakeholders.

“I am grateful to everyone who entrusted me with this role,” Chitima said. “My commitment is to ensure that the needs and expectations of clubs and stakeholders are fully represented and delivered.”
