Murehwa WhatsApp Admin Caged Over Malicious “Cyber-Bullying” Posts

In a landmark case highlighting the sharpening teeth of Zimbabwe’s digital laws, Tasunungurwa Freedom Manuhwa, the administrator of the Murehwa Times community WhatsApp group, has been remanded in custody after admitting to violating the Cyber and Data Protection Act.

Manuhwa, who chose to represent himself without a lawyer, appeared before Harare Magistrate Tapiwa Kuhudzayi this week. His arrest on January 20, 2026, follows a six-month campaign of alleged digital character assassination directed at a prominent local businessman.

The Allegations: Witchcraft Accusations and “Fake News”

The complainant in the matter is Taurai Siyawamwaya, a well-known entrepreneur with business interests in both Harare and Murehwa.

According to the state’s case, between June and December 2025, Manuhwa used his position as a WhatsApp admin and an employee of an unregistered social media news channel to broadcast highly defamatory content. Using an Econet line registered in his own name, Manuhwa allegedly posted messages claiming that a spiritual healer, known as Kanemgo, had “exposed” Siyawamwaya as the cause of his son Nathan’s mental disability.

The malicious posts further alleged that Siyawamwaya had hidden at the Chibhanguza Hotel during a cleansing ceremony, waiting to hear the “verdict” of a traditional court regarding his alleged occult practices.

The Cyber-Bullying Charge

The court heard that on September 3, 2025, Siyawamwaya discovered the posts, which he characterized as a coordinated cyber-bullying attack. The state argues that Manuhwa’s intent was to inflict “substantial emotional distress” and strip the complainant of his dignity through the viral reach of the WhatsApp channel.

The prosecution’s case is bolstered by technical evidence. Upon his arrest, Manuhwa was found with the mobile handset and SIM card used to transmit the messages. Crucially, a report from the CID Cyber Laboratory has been obtained and will be presented as a key exhibit to prove the origin and distribution of the defamatory text.
