President Emmerson Mnangagwa has dismissed speculation that businessman Wicknell Chivayo is distributing vehicles and cash on his behalf, particularly to Zanu-PF members and artists.
Responding to claims that Chivayo is acting as his proxy to gain political support, Mnangagwa insisted that the businessman is simply a philanthropist. This stance contrasts sharply with that of Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, who appears to view Chivayo with suspicion.
Addressing journalists at State House on Monday, Mnangagwa denied providing Chivayo with funds, urging those making accusations to investigate the source of the businessman’s wealth.
“Where would I get the money to give him?” Mnangagwa asked. “If anyone has been robbed, they should report to the police rather than wasting time accusing someone who is using his own money.”
Chivayo has been making headlines for handing out vehicles and cash across Zimbabwe, at times throwing banknotes into crowds, causing frenzies among citizens. His actions have fueled speculation that his generosity is politically motivated.
While Mnangagwa praises him as a benefactor, Chiwenga appears to hold a different view. Speaking at a recent memorial event, the Vice President made indirect remarks about individuals accumulating wealth through questionable means, using the term “chigananda,” which refers to those profiting at others’ expense.
Chivayo has openly backed Mnangagwa’s continued leadership beyond 2028, arguing that his vision should not be disrupted. However, his stance has further stoked controversy within Zanu-PF.
War veteran and Zanu-PF Central Committee member Blessed Geza, now wanted by authorities after publicly demanding Mnangagwa’s resignation over corruption, has also raised concerns about Chivayo’s wealth. Geza suggested that Chivayo’s financial influence serves to distract from deeper governance issues.
Despite the mounting debate, Mnangagwa remains firm in his position, maintaining that Chivayo’s generosity is independent of any political agenda.
