Residents in Harare’s high-density suburbs are concerned about a bed bug infestation that originated in Mbare flats and has since spread to areas like Mabvuku, Kuwadzana, and Budiriro.
Despite Harare City Council’s fumigation efforts in Mbare, the bugs continue to spread, causing discomfort and health worries.
Residents attribute the spread to interactions with Mbare residents and visitors.
One resident claimed, “I am convinced the bugs came from my cousins who visited us from Mbare flats.”
Affected residents have tried various methods to eliminate the bugs, including washing bedding and using insecticides, but to no avail.
Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume stated that the local authority has not received official reports from affected areas but attributed the spread to the second-hand clothes trade.
The council plans to conduct multiple rounds of fumigation to minimize the spread.
