Health Ministry Responds to Criticism Over Public Hospital Conditions

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has officially responded to growing public concern shared on social media regarding the state of Zimbabwe’s public hospitals.

This follows remarks made by the Minister of Youth Empowerment, Development, and Vocational Training, who recently visited one of the country’s major public hospitals and later took to social media to express serious alarm over the poor condition of public healthcare infrastructure. The minister went so far as to urge the President to personally inspect these facilities.

In a formal statement, the Ministry acknowledged the concerns that have been raised across social media platforms but suggested that many of the criticisms form part of what they view as a deliberate and unfair campaign to discredit the health sector.

According to the Ministry, such commentary has focused disproportionately on the problems without acknowledging the continued service delivery being maintained under difficult financial constraints. They emphasized that, despite limited resources, the healthcare system continues to function and deliver critical services.

“These comments appear to be coordinated efforts to focus solely on shortcomings, ignoring the progress we’ve made and the essential services we continue to provide,” the statement read.

The Ministry stressed that while it welcomes feedback and acknowledges the right of citizens to voice their concerns, it prefers engagement based on facts rather than emotionally charged or politically motivated narratives.

“We are open to constructive discussions and well-informed feedback,” the Ministry said. “However, we must also defend the dedication of our healthcare workers and highlight the meaningful progress made throughout the country.”

To counterbalance the criticism, the Ministry outlined several achievements under the Second Republic, including:

• Hospital Improvements: Modernization and refurbishment of district and provincial health facilities.

• Medical Equipment & Supplies: Increased availability of essential drugs and medical tools.

• Healthcare Worker Development: Expanded training and development initiatives for medical staff.

• Maternal and Neonatal Care: Enhanced delivery care resulting in better outcomes for mothers and babies.

• Specialized Procedures: Successful open-heart surgeries conducted at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.

• Telemedicine: Introduction of remote healthcare services in rural areas like Gokwe North, showcasing technological innovation.

The Ministry concluded by reiterating its commitment to improving public healthcare and invited all stakeholders to participate in fact-based, solution-oriented dialogue.
