The football community is mourning the death of former Orlando Pirates and Zimbabwe international forward, Tendai Ndoro, who passed away after a prolonged illness. He was 40.
Nicknamed *Fire* during his playing career, Ndoro was known for his sharp finishing and lively personality that made him a fan favourite across South Africa and beyond.
A source close to his family confirmed that Ndoro was discovered lifeless in his South African apartment. Former Warriors midfielder Edelbert Dinha, himself a former Pirates and Ajax Cape Town player, was among the first to arrive at the scene.
“It’s painful, my brother. I’m not feeling okay at all. I’m actually here right now. We are still trying to establish the full circumstances, but what we know is that he passed away a few days ago. Relatives and fellow former players, including Peter Ndlovu, are here as well to support the family,” Dinha said.
From Bulawayo to the PSL and beyond
Born in Bulawayo, Ndoro first made his mark with Chicken Inn in the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League, where his goal-scoring instincts earned him national recognition. His move to South Africa saw him join Mpumalanga Black Aces, before sealing a high-profile switch to Orlando Pirates in 2015.
At Pirates, he produced some of his best football, netting important goals and cementing his reputation as one of the most dangerous strikers in the PSL. His career later took him to Saudi Arabia with Al-Faisaly, before returning to South Africa for stints with Ajax Cape Town and Highlands Park.
On the international stage, Ndoro represented the Zimbabwe Warriors between 2013 and 2017, featuring at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Struggles after retirement
In retirement, Ndoro’s health declined significantly. He endured serious medical complications, including temporary blindness and severe weight loss, sparking concern across the football world. Despite undergoing treatment and showing signs of recovery earlier this year, his condition worsened, leading to his passing.

Messages of condolence have been flooding social media from clubs, teammates, and supporters who remember Ndoro not only for his goals but also for the energy and flair he brought to the game.
His story remains one of raw talent, perseverance, and inspiration for young players in Zimbabwe and South Africa.
May he rest in peace, and may his family and loved ones draw strength from the legacy he leaves behind.
