FIFA Opens Disciplinary Proceedings Against South Africa Over Mokoena Eligibility

FIFA has officially launched a disciplinary procedure involving South Africa and midfielder Teboho Mokoena, who played in the March 21 World Cup qualifier against Lesotho despite being suspended for accumulated yellow cards.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) and Mokoena have been given until 20 September to respond to the proceedings. The case is now being handled by FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee, which has the authority to impose sanctions including fines, suspensions, or even awarding a 3-0 forfeit win to Lesotho.

SAFA has yet to issue an official statement regarding the matter. Lesotho, meanwhile, did not submit a formal complaint after the match and were already beyond the official deadline for lodging an appeal.

The outcome of FIFA’s investigation could have significant implications for South Africa’s 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, as Mokoena’s eligibility has been a point of contention since the March fixture.
