Chivayo Gifts Oscar Pambuka Toyota Fortuner, Cash in Recognition of Anti-Drug Advocacy

Businessman and philanthropist Wicknell Chivayo has gifted veteran broadcaster Oscar Pambuka a brand-new 2025 Toyota Fortuner 4×4 and US$10,000 in cash, citing the former news anchor’s rehabilitation journey and his growing role in the fight against drug and substance abuse.

 

Chivayo announced the gesture on Tuesday, describing it as recognition of Pambuka’s courage to confront addiction, accept responsibility for past mistakes and commit to change through rehabilitation under the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS).

 

Pambuka, once one of the most recognisable faces on national television, anchored prime-time news bulletins and became synonymous with the opening line, *“The News at Eight, read by Oscar Pambuka.”* His career was later derailed by substance abuse, which led to conviction, loss of employment and a prison sentence.

 

According to Chivayo, what appeared to be the end of Pambuka’s career instead marked a turning point. He said Pambuka voluntarily underwent rehabilitation through ZPCS, a decision he described as courageous given the stigma often attached to addiction.

 

“Rehabilitation works and change is possible,” Chivayo said, adding that Pambuka’s willingness to openly share his experience has helped warn young people about the dangers of drugs and substance abuse.

 

Since his release, Pambuka has emerged as an advocate against drug abuse, particularly targeting youths, who are considered most vulnerable. His advocacy aligns with the government’s anti-drug campaign led by President Emmerson Mnangagwa and supported by First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa through the Angel of Hope Foundation.

 

In recognition of his efforts, Chivayo said arrangements had been made for Pambuka to collect the fully paid Toyota Fortuner from Exquisite Car Dealership, along with US$10,000 intended for fuel and as a Christmas gift.

 

Chivayo said the gesture was also meant to reinforce the principle of second chances, especially for individuals recovering from substance addiction.

 

Zimbabweans, he added, look forward to the possibility of Pambuka returning to broadcasting, once again hearing the iconic prime-time introduction that defined an era in local journalism.

 

The donation comes amid heightened national focus on combating drug and substance abuse, with authorities and civil society calling for increased rehabilitation, reintegration and support for recovering addicts.
