Bulawayo Man Dies After Ingesting Poison Following Dispute With Mother

A 21-year-old man from Cowdray Park, Bulawayo, tragically passed away after consuming rat poison in the aftermath of a disagreement with his mother over spilled cooking oil.

According to Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, the spokesperson for the Bulawayo police, the deceased—identified as Thabiso Ndlovu—ingested the toxic substance on Saturday, July 12. The argument reportedly began when his mother scolded him for accidentally spilling two liters of cooking oil.

“The confrontation stemmed from a minor domestic issue,” Inspector Msebele stated. “Unfortunately, it escalated in a way that led to a heartbreaking outcome.”

After taking the poison, Ndlovu exhibited immediate symptoms. His mother found him vomiting and, upon questioning, he admitted to having consumed rat poison. Emergency medical responders were called, and he was taken to Mpilo Central Hospital, where he received urgent medical care.

Despite efforts to stabilize his condition, Ndlovu died in the early hours of Monday morning. His mother was informed of his passing around 5:40 AM.

Inspector Msebele urged families to seek help during emotionally intense situations and highlighted the importance of mental health awareness. “We encourage families to talk openly and make use of counseling and support services. Suicide is never the answer,” she said.

The police further emphasized their support for community mental health programs and called on residents to take advantage of the services available.
