Biography of Donald J. Trump, 45th President of the United States

Donald John Trump, born on June 14, 1946, in Queens, New York, was raised in a family with deep roots in real estate. His father, Fred Trump, was a prominent property developer. Trump attended the New York Military Academy before graduating from the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce at the University of Pennsylvania.

In 1971, Trump assumed control of his family’s real estate business, which he renamed the Trump Organization. Under his leadership, the company expanded its portfolio to include hotels, resorts, office buildings, residential properties, casinos, and golf courses. Trump gained further prominence with the release of his 1987 book, The Art of the Deal, and later as the host of the reality television show The Apprentice, which premiered in 2004.

He married Melania Knauss in 2005, and they have one son, Barron. Trump also has four other children—Donald Jr., Ivanka, Eric, and Tiffany—from previous marriages.

Trump entered the political arena during the 2016 election cycle, winning the Republican nomination after defeating a crowded field of candidates. Although he lost the nationwide popular vote, he secured the presidency by winning a majority of Electoral College votes against Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton. His campaign was built around the slogan “Make America Great Again.”

With no prior experience in elected office, Trump often communicated his administration’s agenda through unconventional means—most notably via Twitter, where he addressed the public, lawmakers, and the media directly.

During his term, Trump signed a major tax overhaul into law and pursued a broad rollback of federal regulations. His administration took a protectionist approach to trade, imposing tariffs on steel, aluminum, and other imports, and renegotiated trade agreements with nations such as Mexico, Canada, Japan, China, and South Korea. Domestically, his priorities included judicial appointments, increasing military funding, stricter immigration controls, criminal justice reform, and lowering prescription drug costs.

In foreign policy, Trump made headlines by relocating the U.S. Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem and facilitating diplomatic agreements between Israel and several Arab nations. He also became the first sitting U.S. president to meet a North Korean leader when he attended a summit with Kim Jong Un in 2018.

That same year, a prolonged government shutdown occurred over disagreements in Congress about funding for a U.S.-Mexico border wall. The shutdown lasted 35 days, the longest in U.S. history.

In 2019, Trump faced scrutiny after a whistleblower alleged he had pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate Hunter Biden, son of former Vice President Joe Biden. This led to his first impeachment by the House of Representatives on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The Senate later acquitted him.

Trump’s final year in office was largely shaped by the COVID-19 pandemic, which officially reached the U.S. in January 2020. Critics accused him of responding too slowly and downplaying the virus. However, his administration launched “Operation Warp Speed,” which helped fast-track the development of effective vaccines. By the end of his term, over 400,000 Americans had died from the virus.

Trump lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden but refused to concede, repeatedly claiming that the results were tainted by fraud. On January 6, 2021, during a rally near the White House, Trump encouraged his supporters to challenge the certification of Electoral College votes. The protest escalated into a violent assault on the U.S. Capitol, resulting in five deaths, significant damage, and a temporary halt to the electoral vote count.

Following the events, Trump was impeached a second time by the House, this time on the charge of incitement of insurrection. He remains the only U.S. president to be impeached twice by Congress.
