A tragic road accident claimed five lives — including two children — on Friday, after an overloaded private commuter omnibus overturned along the Harare–Mutoko Road.
The vehicle, reportedly carrying passengers along with heavy goods such as bricks and tombstones, lost control and crashed, leaving behind a scene of devastation.
Budiriro South Member of Parliament Darlington Chigumbu, who came across the aftermath, described the incident as heartbreaking. In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), he said:
“I witnessed a devastating accident on my way from Murewa today. A private kombi transporting people along with bricks and tombstones overturned, killing five people on the spot. What broke me most was seeing two young children lying lifeless among the wreckage.”
Chigumbu also noted a chilling detail from the scene — a dead owl found among the debris — which sparked superstitious speculation among bystanders, some suggesting it had come from a passenger’s belongings.
Authorities have not confirmed any link to the owl but have reiterated long-standing warnings. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has consistently cautioned against the dangerous practice of transporting both passengers and cargo in the same vehicle, citing serious safety risks.
Investigations into the crash are ongoing.
