Iconic Zimbabwean musician Thomas “Mukanya” Mapfumo is slated for two high-profile performances following an unprecedented US$1 million payment from prominent businessman Wicknell Chivayo. The substantial sum, reportedly US$500,000 per appearance, positions Mapfumo as potentially the highest-paid artist in the nation’s history for a single engagement.
Chivayo publicly confirmed the agreement via a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, July 13, 2026. In his announcement, the businessman expressed his satisfaction in fulfilling his commitment, stating:
“I am pleased to announce that I will wholeheartedly honour my commitment by paying a record-breaking US$1 million for these two shows at US$500,000 per show. This will make the legendary Thomas Tafireyi Mapfumo the highest paid singer ever in the history of our beloved country.”
The performances are anticipated to take place at fellow musician Jah Prayzah’s wedding and Chivayo’s own birthday celebration. Chivayo extended his congratulations to Mapfumo, acknowledging the artist’s independent decision to accept the engagement despite potential external pressures.
Beyond the financial landmark, Chivayo also paid tribute to Mapfumo’s enduring legacy, highlighting his profound impact on Zimbabwean music and his significant role in the country’s liberation struggle. He remarked:
“Your music has educated, inspired, united and comforted generations of Zimbabweans, and your legacy will continue to live on for many years to come.”
Further plans include a potential third performance by Mapfumo later in 2026. Chivayo hopes to host the music legend at a housewarming event for his Gandami property, expected to be completed between late November and mid-December. This occasion, he noted, would be a “truly special” opportunity to celebrate a living icon whose music is deeply woven into Zimbabwe’s cultural fabric.
