Zimbabwe Achieves Major Milestone with Launch of Zimplats Solar Project
Zimbabwe took a major step forward today in its pursuit of sustainable energy and responsible mining practices, as President Emmerson Mnangagwa prepares to officially launch a 35-megawatt solar power plant developed by Zimplats.
The US$37 million facility, located in Selous near Chegutu, represents the initial phase of a broader 185 MW solar project designed to support the mining sector’s transition toward cleaner and more reliable energy sources.
This development is closely tied to the Government’s broader economic agenda, including its ambition to build a US$12 billion mining industry and reach upper middle-income status by 2030. During his visit, President Mnangagwa is expected to spotlight how the solar plant supports these national goals by improving energy access, reducing dependence on the national grid, and cutting operational costs for Zimplats.
Beyond energy benefits, the solar project has already had a significant social impact. Over 1,600 contract workers—most from the surrounding communities—were engaged during the plant’s construction phase. The project also offered technical upskilling opportunities for existing Zimplats staff, contributing to workforce development in the area.
The solar plant’s commissioning is a key component of a broader investment partnership between the Government of Zimbabwe and Zimplats, outlined in a Memorandum of Understanding signed in November 2021. This MoU sets the foundation for a US$1.8 billion expansion strategy spanning 2021 to 2031. So far, Zimplats has invested US$1.2 billion toward that long-term vision.
This bold initiative underscores Zimbabwe’s commitment to environmentally responsible industrial growth and energy innovation.
