The Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) has officially appointed Mr. Sugar Chagonda as its new Chief Executive Officer, with his term beginning on August 1, 2025.
In a formal statement, the ZBC Board praised Chagonda’s extensive background in media and communications, highlighting over two decades of experience in public relations and strategic messaging. His appointment is seen as a move to lead the national broadcaster through a period of modernization and creative renewal.
Chagonda began his professional journey at ZBC in 2004, laying the foundation for a career that would span both the public and corporate sectors. In 2009, he transitioned to the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA), where he headed Corporate Affairs and played a central role in repositioning Zimbabwe’s global tourism brand.
He later took on the role of Corporate Affairs Executive at the Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (ZCDC) in 2018, where his efforts centered on enhancing governance frameworks, stakeholder relationships, and strategic communication.
Beyond his work in media and corporate circles, Chagonda has made meaningful contributions to Zimbabwean sport. He previously served on the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) board and was the founding secretary-general of Manica Diamonds Football Club, helping promote youth development and talent in football.
Academically, Mr. Chagonda holds a bachelor’s degree in social studies from the University of Zimbabwe, a master’s in public policy and governance from Africa University, and an executive MBA from Midlands State University.
ZBC Appoints Sugar Chagonda as New CEO
ZBC Board Chairperson Helliate Rushwaya welcomed the appointment, calling it a critical moment for the broadcaster’s evolution in both content and operations.
“Although we’ve made improvements to facilities such as Pockets Hill and Montrose studios, we recognize there’s still more ground to cover,” Rushwaya said. “With the leadership now in place, we’re committed to delivering powerful local programming that reflects the true Zimbabwean narrative.”
She also emphasized the broadcaster’s goal to shift public perception by enhancing the quality of its visuals and editorial output, aligning with international broadcasting standards.
