A disturbing video allegedly showing two police officers beating a suspect during an arrest in Kuwadzana has placed the conduct of the Zimbabwe Republic Police under renewed scrutiny, raising questions about the use of force by officers entrusted with protecting the public.
The footage, which has circulated widely on social media, reportedly captures the officers assaulting a man at Bolo Shops in Kuwadzana Phase 3. The images have intensified public concern over the treatment of suspects and the extent to which some officers may be disregarding basic standards of police conduct.
The two officers, said to be attached to Dzivarasekwa Police Station, are now under investigation. Although the full circumstances surrounding the incident have yet to be established, the alleged assault has already triggered demands for accountability and a transparent explanation from the police.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that investigations were in progress, saying the force had taken note of the video and was examining the alleged incident.
The investigation comes at a time when the police are under pressure to demonstrate that claims of misconduct are not simply met with statements, but with meaningful disciplinary and criminal action where wrongdoing is established.
In a separate video, another officer stationed at a roadblock in Victoria Falls is allegedly seen negotiating with a tourist over an iPhone instead of issuing a fine for a suspected traffic offence. Police are investigating that footage to establish whether it is authentic, identify the officer and determine when and where the incident occurred.
However, it is the Kuwadzana video that has drawn the sharpest public reaction. Unlike allegations that can remain hidden behind official paperwork, the footage appears to place the alleged conduct directly before the public, leaving the authorities with little room to avoid confronting the claims.
The police have previously declared that officers involved in corruption or the abuse of their powers will be arrested and face the full force of the law. The current investigations will test whether that commitment extends to officers accused of using violence against a suspect in full view of witnesses and a camera.
Commissioner Nyathi said further details would be released as the investigations progress, adding that stern action would be taken against members who fail to perform their duties in accordance with police standards and the principles of the Police Client Service Charter.
The officers have not been convicted of any offence, and the allegations must still be established through due process. Nevertheless, the video has placed the Dzivarasekwa officers and the police leadership under intense scrutiny, with the public now waiting to see whether the inquiry produces consequences—or another promise of action that fades from view.
