University of Zimbabwe Suspends Six Students Over Protest

Six students from the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) have been indefinitely suspended following a protest held in May in support of lecturers who have been on strike since mid-April.

The suspended students—Narshon Kohlo, Blessing Mtisi, Nodesha Maingehama, Tafadzwa Katsande, Tawana Hove, and Tariro Mtukura—are affiliated with the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU), UZ Chapter.

They are accused of organizing and leading a spontaneous demonstration on campus, urging the university to address the demands of striking academic staff.

Lecturers at the institution began their industrial action on April 16, calling for a significant wage adjustment from US$250 to at least US$2,250, in addition to better working conditions.

According to official suspension letters issued by UZ Vice Chancellor Professor Paul Mapfumo, the action against the students is being taken under Section 8(3)(e) of the University of Zimbabwe Act [Chapter 25:16].

“In view of the gravity of the allegations, you are hereby suspended from your studies with immediate effect, pending a disciplinary hearing,” read the letters.

“You are also prohibited from entering any University of Zimbabwe premises and must return your student identification card to the Director of Asset Protection Services.”

The students are scheduled to face a disciplinary hearing next week, where they will be expected to respond to the charges related to their participation in the protest.
